Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally and United Parcel Service Inc. chairman and CEO Scott Davis were among U.S. business leaders named Wednesday to the President’s Export Council.

The council advises President Obama on ways to encourage companies to increase their exports and enter new markets, according to a news release from Ford.

“At Ford, we believe an export-driven strategy is critical to achieving our shared goals of economic growth, job creation and a sustainable future,” Mulally said in the release.

“For exports to grow, we must ensure that market access for manufactured goods remains at the center of U.S. trade policy,” he added. “Manufacturing matters to American jobs, investment and economic activity. It represents the future of green, high-tech jobs that will drive innovation, and it also happens to represent more than 60 percent of U.S. exports.”

Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford (NYSE: F) operates two plants in Louisville. The Louisville Assembly Plant on Fern Valley Road makes the Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer. That plant is expected to be retooled later this year to make the Ford Kuga and Ford Escape compact sport-utility vehicles.

Ford also operates the Kentucky Truck Plant on Chamberlain Lane. It produces Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks, as well as Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs.

Ford employs about 5,200 people in Louisville.

In a separate release from UPS, Davis said the company “strongly supports” the removal of international trade barriers and wants to help Obama achieve his goal of doubling U.S. exports over the next five years.

Atlanta-based UPS (NYSE: UPS) has its UPS Airlines headquarters in Louisville, which also is the home to Worldport, the company’s largest international air cargo sorting hub. The company employs about 23,000 people in Kentucky, including about 20,000 in Louisville.
