Ford Verve concept for Frankfurt hints at future Fiesta

Ford Verve Concept

The future of Ford’s Fiesta subcompact has been the subject of much speculation recently — on both sides of the Atlantic. Ever since the news broke that the Blue Oval is intending to bring the next-generation model to the U.S., the Internet has been abuzz with rumors, spy photos, and more about the vehicle.

The fuzzy picture is now starting to come into focus, thanks to the release of first details of the Ford Verve concept — scheduled to make its world debut at next month’s Frankfurt motor show. The Verve is more than just a hint at what the new Fiesta will look like when it hits European streets late next year, according to Ford officials. The U.S. and Asian versions of the vehicle will follow behind and should be here by 2010 latest, according to recent reports.

Ford designers in Dunton, England, and Cologne, Germany, penned the concept, which the company will display to gauge reaction. After looking at the photos we’ve posted here, our reaction so far is decidedly positive.

The next-gen Fiesta (a new name for the vehicle is being discussed) is the first big test of Ford CEO Alan Mulally’s global vehicle strategy. Earlier this year, Ford created a global engineering team to help develop the car by merging operations in Europe, Asia, and North America.

The low-slung two-door carries some of the kinetic design elements seen on recent Ford of Europe offerings. It’s clear Ford is serious about creating a small car that can compete not only on a volume level, but with some style as well.

Of course, the final production model will be toned down, but it still should carry many of the concept’s design elements. The B-segment car will share its platform with the recently launched Mazda2 and will likely come with a range of engines for Europe, including a new turbodiesel mill co-developed with PSA Peugeot Citroen. Best guess for the U.S. at this point is either a 1.6-liter or 1.8-liter engine. Ford is hoping that volume of the new car, combined with the Mazda2, will reach some one million units a year after production ramps up worldwide.

Stay tuned to motortrend.com for all the latest from Frankfurt as it happens, September 11-12.
